Southern Quill Art Exhibit Now Open to Public at Kane Co. Hospital

Nearly 40 people gathered at the Kane County Hospital on June 17, for the opening of the Southern Quill art and poetry exhibit. The exhibit, presented by Dixie State College (DSC) of Utah and the Center for Education, Business and the Arts (CEBA) is part of a special DSC Centennial exhibit featuring the near 60-year history of Dixie's literary magazine The Southern Quill. The exhibit, entitled "The Cycle of Life: The Best of Dixie State College's Literary Magazine The Southern Quill – Poetry, Prose & Photography," will be on display from now until Thursday, July 15, 2010. Admission to the exhibit is open to the public free of charge at the Kane County Hospital, located at 355 North Main Street in Kanab.

The opening of the exhibit was highlighted by DSC President Dr. Stephen D. Nadauld, who has a featured original poem alongside works by current DSC students, alumni and community members. Nadauld mentioned the event was the first of 100 events celebrating DSC’s Centennial Celebration anniversary and in 2011, the 60th-edition of The Southern Quill will be published to coincide the celebration.

Since the 1950s, The Southern Quill has provided the citizens of southern Utah with an outlet for their creative writing and artwork – among them short stories, poetry and photography. In recent years, this literary magazine, published by the College, has been expanding its scope by also accepting non-fiction materials, such as literature reviews and essays. The exhibit features several works by Kane County artists and poets including poet laureate Doug Keller.
